Selling Sprouts In Phnom Penh. Travel Photo #97.

The best markets in Phnom Penh start at about dusk and run well into the night. Fresh produce fares much better away from the heat of the midday sun, so meats and fish are slaughtered on the spot for the evening sale. This fellow, however, was just selling bean sprouts.

Photographing in this kind of environment can sometimes be too much, too obvious and too easy. Or maybe, you get tempted to take photos of everything because it looks so good, so photogenic, so posed. Sometimes you get lucky, and sometimes things are just one big cliche. Nonetheless, it’s one of my favourites in terms of subject matter and when I get to a new country or place it’s usually the night markets and nighttime in general that I find my first inspiration. The new camera and lens, Canon 6D and 85mm f1.8, really shines in this kind of environment. this was taken at f1.8, iso 10,000. A tiny bit of noise reduction applied and barely any post-processing, and here we are. This photo is summarises why I upgraded my photographic gear.

The Markets Of Noumea, Travel Photo #64.

In Noumea, New caledonia, the weather is fine and the local beer is good. I was there for one afternoon, just long enough to nurse my hangover with some baked goodies and an ale or two. The local language is French, which felt a little off considering it is a South Pacific island. But I guess the French have quite a few colonies and ex-colonies throughout the world. Being from Australia it’s easy to forget that the English weren’t the only explorers of last millennium.

Spiced and grilled meats of every kind are just a little too tempting
for this girl at a Bandar Seri Begawan night market in Brunei.
She’s got her eye on something and is just about to pull her parents
over here by the hand to make sure she gets it.

Travel Photo Of The Day #50: Suwon Markets, Korea.

Rain comes down on the market in Suwon, Korea.
Rain comes down on the market in Suwon, Korea.

50 travel photos, a milestone! Woo. anyway, Korea is awesome. The people are great, the food is my favourite ever, the country in general is cool. We had a show rained out due to a typhoon’s suprise appearance, and this is the day was the tail end of it. My first typhoon, nothing too crazy but quite damp.

Travel Photo Of The Day #14: Brunei Night Market

A man and woman contemplate grilled meat in Brunei.

Brunei is a very strange country, having been to a few other countries in Southeast Asia. No alcohol, no drugs, lots of money, good infrastructure, very religious… a little like Singapore, but without any big cities at all. I’m still getting used to it. The night markets are a nice little affair, mostly good food and a few other little things. The whole feeling is one of homeliness. It’s nice. The people are nice. I feel lazy not having to attempt speaking Malay, but every Bruneian speaks fluent Malay, English and, more often than not, Arabic. The days are hot but not oppressively so, and the nights are perfect.
