Walking The Donkeys, Berlin. Travel Photo #81.

These girls were jogging by with their donkeys in a park in central Berlin. Highschool German lessons jumped into action! “Ein Foto, bitte?” popped out of my mouth. I don’t know if they knew what a sight they were, but I thought they were glorious. I snapped a few shots before they went on their way.

Save Me From The Jellyfish, Dad! Travel Photo #76.

Badalona Beach is just north of Barcelona, and is a much more pleasant and less crowded place to relax than Barcelona’s beach. One afternoon I was there, a whole smack of large jellyfish invaded the water. These things looked as big as a trashcan lid. Bathers exited the water hurriedly as the jellies washed ashore and surrounded anyone still in the ocean.

This child was most excited to see them, instinctively both curious and cautious. He kept his distance from them. Things change, his father being the juvenile now. He pokes and prods the jellyfish while his young son looks on, taking the posture of the adult in the relationship. Dynamics of trust and protection blur in this moment: the father becomes the child and protector, and the child is now both the sensible one and the one in need of protection and guidance.

Barcelona’s Divers. Travel Photo #75.

IMG_5692

As a sequel to yesterday’s travel photo, this shows what cheeky spanish kids get up to. The diving platform was off limits; the stairs had been taken away from the bottom of the tower. These kids would jump the fence, monkey up the bottom of the tower then race to the top and suddenly it would all come to a halt. Who jumps first? The pool lifeguards just watched, probably exercising their right as humans to believe in darwinism.

This english family watching them seemed perplexed. Even the kids were scratching their heads like, what are they doing? It’s like it never occurred to them that an activity such as this could be classified as fun. I guess it’s not a very English past time, cliff jumping or anything like that. It is a very mediterranean activity though.

The Olympic Diving Pool, Barcelona. Travel Photo #74.

We had a house up on the hill in Barcelona, at the bottom of this huge set of steps. At the top of these steps was the Barcelona Olympic Diving Pool. On days or afternoons off, we would struggle up these bloody stairs in the heat and would be rewarded with an afternoons of sun, swimming and ice-cream. I ate so many ice creams. It has one of the best views of Barcelona city too.

This is the famous pool from a Kylie Minogue video clip among other things, and while we were there one day they were shooting a Ford car commercial with a car hung halfway down the 10 metre diving platform. A guy somehow performed a dive through two open doors of the car and into the water. Anyway, I’ve got some nice memories here of summer and ice-cream and I think it’s easy to see why. It was always a happy place, even though you couldn’t leave your bags unattended. I saw some thefts there, more than anywhere else in the city.

The translation of this lovely piece of graffiti is “God is love”. Kind of nice really. Much better than something like “Drugz N Money”, but not quite as witty as some bathroom scrawls I’ve been privileged to have been enlightened by in the past. I guess if you’re going to write anything on a beautiful beach you may as well make it about God. Whether you are religious or not, it’s a nice pure sentiment.

Blue Dolphins In Palafrugell, Travel Photo #59.

This is the view from the cliff. I called this photo “Blue Dolphins In Palafrugell” because I was having a conversation with my girlfriend (a fine art student) about how titles of an artwork can completely change the viewer’s experience. I think if i had called it “Weeds On A Hill”, you the viewer probably would have been looking at the extreme foreground of the picture instead of the blue blow up dolphins in the water. I could have called it “House On A Spanish Beach”, and you may well have focused on the spacious house right on the sand, or at least looked at the houses in the background first. Even “Untitled” has many connotations that are specific to the picture it is associated to. I’m starting to see the closeness between the title and the accompanying work, and how it can skew the viewer’s attention.

If you look at “Spot The English Kid, Travel Photo #55”, a post from a few days ago, you might be able to see that the photo in that post was taken from the other side of that rocky outcrop in the middle of the beach. Such a photogenic area, and time of year. It just seems to have this feeling of… I don’t know. Relaxation, maybe. Not a very eloquent description I know, but I’ll try to elaborate. People say Australian beaches are nice, and I agree. The only problem is that there is pretty much always something dangerous lurking around you. The sun is harsh in Australia, especially in the south. There are dangerous currents, sharks, jellyfish. In the north of Australia there are deadly jellyfish and saltwater crocodiles, so most beaches are off limits for a large part of the year. But the Mediterranean, now that’s another story. nothing dangerous in that ocean. You just run to the sand, drop your towel and scamper into the cool water.

We had one afternoon at this beach on the Costa Brava in Spain, at a place called Palafrugell. We drove down there and I suddenly remembered the whole place from when i was 12 years old when we were visiting my Spanish relatives. It was quite cool. I remember doing exactly what these kids are doing in this picture. I wonder if they will keep this moment, or whether it will blend together and end up as an indistinct mess of beach days and restaurant nights. I recalled the whole thing so clearly the moment we drove down the hill towards the beach.

Travel Photo Of The Day #10: Dawn On A Spanish Highway

The sun comes up on a spanish highway.

This was taken as the sun was coming up through the summer heat in Spain, just outside of Barcelona. I remember being very excited for what was to come, and that feeling ended up being pretty much spot on.

Travel Photo Of The Day #8: La Sagrada Familia, Barcelona.

IMG_2843

The first afternoon we arrived in Barcelona, the apartment we had for the first week of rehearsals was on Avinguda Diagonal. This was the amazing view from the apartment as the sun was going down. Gaudi’s most famous (albeit unfinished) work, La Sagrada Familia. The sound and smell of firecrackers was in the air as the summer solstice festival was kicking off that week. We did the most spanish things we could: good ham, olives and cheese, some cheap wine and the hot summer air.
